Mare Crisium is the most well-defined of the maria.  It can easily be seen as  a round dark spot on the eastern side of the moon.  The mare is oval with the major axis running east-west.  Because of its position its shape appears more circular to us.  Crisium is about 570 kilometers in diameter, and has a surface area of about 176,000 square kilometers.  This is comparable to the area of Great Britain.
