The term "waxing crescent" refers to the moon from new moon to first quarter. Sunlight is making its way across the moon from east to west, but the moon is not yet half illuminated. You can see Theophilus, Cyrillus and Catherina craters in the middle and the round dark Mare Crisium in the upper right.
